Centrifuge is short, fun and challenging. It lasts one week, start to finish. The premise is simple. We pair playwrights and science writers at random to produce 10 minute science plays, each accompanied by a 5 minute presentation of the science.
On Monday evening, June 20th, all the participants gather. We pair the five playwrights and five science writers. A theme – chosen at random from suggestions from the participants – is given to the five teams. Each team’s assignment: use the theme as a basis for a 10 minute science play and a 5 minute presentation of the science. These will be performed on Friday and Saturday nights, June 24th and 25th.
The writing teams are free to use whatever science they like – so long as it is current. Each team has until 5 pm on Wednesday to turn in a script and a presentation outline. Wednesday night, the directors draw their plays – and their actors – at random, and rehearsals begin. More rehearsal Thursday night. Meanwhile, the designers are at work. Tech/dress rehearsals are Friday afternoon – and the shows go up Friday and Saturday night.
