Tom Selleck has Been Replaced

If you have have participated in 14/48, The World’s Quickest Theatre Festival, you are well familiar with the beloved “draw cans” from which the names of the actors are randomly pulled to perform in the plays the directors have randomly selected earlier. The female actors names live in a can bearing the iconic image of Farrah Fawcett, deliciously smiling and high-beaming in a red swimsuit.  The male actors live in a can adorned with Tom Selleck, circa Magnum P.I. Or they […]

All the World’s a Theatre in the Round

Theatre in the round is a lot like 14/48 itself—or theatre in general for that matter—it seems like a bright idea until you start really looking at the logistics of it. For the first time in the long history of the festival, the plays will be staged in the arena format in ACT’s Allen Theatre. As Shawn Belyea, Executive Director of 14/48 and Artist Liaison for this weekend, points out: “Most theatre artists in this town don’t get to work […]

Explicate

ex-pli-cate [ek-spli-keyt] -verb (used with object), -cat-ed, -cat-ing. to make plain or clear; explain; interpret. Used in a Sentence: There is a lot of explicating to do in the 8th floor rehearsal room today, where Erin Kraft, Tina LaPadula, and John Paulsen are working furiously to make sense of PLAY 7, We’re Not Talking by Paul Mullin. Inner monologue, imaginary voices, a beach blanket? Come make sense of it all yourself, when We’re Not Talking premieres and closes tonight at […]

Memorization has Begun

I entered the Allen Theatre (for the first time ever) and all I can say is… wow! It’s gorgeous. Today, the Allen Theatre is the sacred rehearsal space of Nicole Boyer Cochran and her intrepid 14/48 cast (Rob Burgess, Mark Boeker, Rob Jones, Annie Lareau, Kate Parker). Together they are working on Paul Mullin’s play, /me misses hyperbaric. At this moment, the cast is hard at work memorizing the piece, which may or may not have something to do with […]

Building a House

I sat in on a conversation designer Ahren Buhmann was having with director Tyrone Brown. Tyrone drew out his ground plan and indicated where the kitchen, living room and bedroom would be… the various playing areas in his piece. He then asked for a swimming pool and a 2 car garage. In the upstairs level, Paul Mullin and Nicole Boyer Cochran said their play is TOP SECRET. What!? Top secret!? I had to know more and, after Paul called me […]

One last night cap…

Before I go and dream of flying goldfish and a talking whale named Gus, I leave you with a few more memorable quotes and moments from the evening… * Mazen Winner Elizabeth Heffron drew the final show for night one – 3 Men, 2 Women * “Andy Jensen is drawing for Paul Mullin.” –Shawn Belyea (followed by a delightful chorus of boos which is the only appropriate response if someone is unable to attend the meeting.) * In the above […]
